Sharepoint service applications - Purpose of each component ...


A service application is the one which deploys services and provides functionality in a site.

· Some Service applications can be shared across sites throughout farms like search, user profile, managed metadata etc.

· E.g. Search Service Application provides the functionality of search in a site. 

· The resource or functionality can be accessed by users through a service application connection to a web application.

· You can manage service applications by using Central Administration>Application Management>Manage service applications. 

Search Service Application:

I would be writing more about search service application in detail in another post.


User Profile Service Application:

Centralized management for users of SharePoint Apps.

Set Up User Profile Service Application in SharePoint

The User Profile service application stores information about users in a central location.

It manages the below settings:

· User profile properties

· Audiences

· Profile synchronization settings

· Organization browsing and administration settings

· My Site settings


Managed metadata service application

Managed metadata service application makes it possible to use managed metadata and share content types across site collections and web applications.

The service identifies the database to be used as the term store, and the connection provides access to the service.

    When you create new managed terms, or when users add enterprise keywords, these terms are stored in         the database that is specified in the managed metadata service.

· Assign or remove administrators to a service application

· Delete a service application

· Share service apps across farms

· Administer services of a service application.
