A service application is the one which deploys services and provides functionality in a site. ·  Some Service applications can be shared across sites throughout farms like search, user profile, managed metadata etc. ·  E.g. Search Service Application provides the functionality of search in a site.   ·  The resource or functionality can be accessed by users through a service application connection to a web application. ·  You can manage service applications by using Central Administration>Application Management>Manage service applications.   Search Service Application: I would be writing more about search service application in detail in another post.
